Smart Skin Parametric Design Exhibition è la mostra dei 10 progetti sviluppati durante il Workshop Internazionale “Parametric Design: Smart Skin for sustainable dwelling”, tenutosial Castello del Valentino (Torino) tra il 6 settembre ed il 5 ottobre 2010 ed a cui hanno partecipato 38 studenti (19 italiani e 19 americani) diretti da Cesare Griffa (Politecnico di Torino) e Ted Ngai (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) e coordinati da Graziella Roccella (Politecnico di Torino).

The parametric workshop engages the problems raised by our rapid pace of urbanization and the ecological impact of our built environment, using two main drivers: the evolving of digital technologies, and the growing of ecological awareness.

Digital technology plays a critical role in acknowledging change and difference in the way we design, build and live architecture. Ecological awareness, on the other hand, requires one to observe and understand the behavioral tendencies of our natural and built systems. The use of parametric design software in this context will enable designers to use design not only as an organizational device serving semiotic, pragmatic and aesthetic functions, but also as a regulator of the internal and external environments, managing bioclimatic flows to maintain homeostasis through intelligent morphologies.

In this framework, the workshop program will develop a Physiological Skin, a concept that explores the “envelope” as a mean to capture, transform, store and distribute various energetic flows to maintain a stable internal environment appropriate for housing in the city of Torino.

The Physiological Skin will not only take on the bioclimatic exchange as its main design challenge, the aesthetic vision as it situates in the historical Italian neighborhood, the Renaissance and Baroque, times of new discoveries and new aesthetics, will also be a main criteria for the successful development of the project.

The proposal is based on the idea that hyper customized Dingbat apartments units can be ordered thru a web application, be assembled in a factory workshop and delivered for the client on a specific “skeleton structure” in the Dingbat 2.0 area.

URBAN SYSTEM
The urban system is based on the division of the area in 44 lots (45’x60’) organized along a Central Alley and two driveways backyards. Each lot can host a maximum of three Dingbat 2.0 single units. On the two sides of the Central Alley, two “skeleton structures” raise from the lots grid, defining the space for each Dingbat apartment unit to be plugged-in. The driveways backyards run under these structures. The Central Alley is the main road of the system, while the two backyards driveways allows to access by car to the four parking places provided to every single lot.

At the beginning of the process, the “skeleton structures” are void. They get full with Dingbat Apartments delivered directly on site after been ordered by the clients, and fabricated in workshops.

SINGLE UNIT CONFIGURATION APP
The Dingbat 2.0 web application is conceived as a complete configuration system in which the client can choose the location of its Apartment, the dimension (SMLXL), number of rooms, shape (box or smooth), materials and even decorative patterns. The system allows for 110 different apartment configurations, each of which can be finished in a number of materials and patterns. The number of different final Apartments units is potentially endless. At the end of the configuration process, the application offers the opportunity to “save”, “modify”, ”restart” or “order” directly the single Dingbat unit. When ordered, the single unit is manufactured in workshop, and delivered on site fully assembled, to be plugged in the skeleton structure.

Such a system allows for a combination of a number of fully customized units, creating a very differentiated house-scape within a typological integrity.

Siamo forse agli albori di una “nuova rivoluzione industriale” caratterizzata dalla trasmigrazione di quelle che, fino ad ora, sono state le modalità produttive di Internet e dei social network, nel mondo reale?

L’arco temporale di circa 20 anni (tempo previsto per la realizzazione del progetto) ci obbliga a spostare l’asse della visione oltre il tangibile e l’immediato anticipando ora i possibili esiti delle trasformazioni che oggi intravediamo con il lumicino. E se la tecnologia ha già in parte travalicato i confini tra il privato e il pubblico, presto lo farà condizionando il rapporto tra produzione materiale e immateriale.

User generated content, open-source, freeware, crowdsourcing, collaborazione on line non sono più termini che appartengono esclusivamente a una dimensione immateriale. Stanno lentamente spostandosi dal mondo della comunicazione e della creatività digitale al mondo della produzione e della manifattura artigianale. E le modalità con cui Internet ha permesso di condividere, collaborare e generare innovazione rendendo accessibili le risorse software presto entreranno a far parte delle modalità relazionali e lavorative della vita reale.

Dal file sharing all’hardware sharing. Quelli che un tempo erano strumenti e attrezzature per la produzione industriale (come stampanti 3D o hardware farms), generalmente costosi, ingombranti e difficilmente ammortizzabili entro logiche di piccole produzioni potranno, nel medio-lungo termine, essere alla portata dei singoli cittadini, grazie a rent e sharing center. Ciò permetterà a una nuova generazione di piccoli imprenditori di poter intraprendere produzioni di nicchia iper-tecnologiche e personalizzate, eredi di antiche pratiche artigianali.

E’ la “società dell’informazione” la prossima frontiera dell’industrializzazione e il grandi spartiacque sociale che determinerà i nuovi equilibri strutturali dei prossimi decenni. Nonché la base di lancio verso forme e pratiche orientate a costruire una sostenibilità economica diffusa.

Quali implicazioni?

Inevitabile pensare che una riorganizzazione del sistema economico a favore della micro-imprenditoria comporti di conseguenza una riorganizzazione morfologica dei comparti urbani in linea con i nuovi significati funzionali e simbolici che quelle aree acquisiranno.

Spina 4, ex zona della piccola manifattura, collegata dalla futura Linea 2 della Metropolitana all’arena simbolo della seconda rivoluzione industriale, Mirafiori, possiede tutte le carte per essere il quartiere capace di traghettare Torino verso la prossima rivoluzione industriale.

Fort Tilden is a DEGENERATED ARMY BODY that, thru a process of abandon, regained its natural environmental value.

The LANDSCAPE ENGAGEMENT is a necessity. There is a natural value that needs to be respected. Nevertheless, the mere conservation of the natural values is not enough to enhance the site as a vital area for a field house, there is a need of a new nervous system to transmit signals of life.

The appearance of a FORT TILDEN CRITICAL MASS ACTIVITY can be the engine of renovation. Such an activity requires a specific space that embed also ecological protest aspects within the preserved landscape.

The degenerated army body is treated thru a NEURONAL APPROACH, that modulates the space thru a series of nerve connections in order to create the conditions for the formation of a dynamic activity embedding sport and ecological awareness. Ecological protest, activism, gathering, natural education, physical exercise, nature defense planning are the activities that take place here.

The nervous matter has the same principles of a rhizome network: connection and heterogeneity, multiplicity, asignifying rupture, cartography and decalcomania. A NEURON ARCHITECTURE shapes the beach landscape creating the conditions for the settlement of a unique ecological activity.

WOODBOX_COMUNICATO STAMPA 1.1

Woodbox, il progetto che nasce dalla collaborazione tra l’azienda Denaldi, architetture in legno, e il Latec, laboratorio tecnologico del Centro Interdipartimentale per la didattica dell’architettura (CISDA) del Politecnico di Torino, passa finalmente alla fase esecutiva.

Il progetto di ricerca, finalizzato alla progettazione di un modulo abitativo in legno parametrico e biomorfo, reversibile ed energeticamente attivo, è stato selezionato e finanziato tramite una misura di sostegno alla ricerca promossa dall’Unione Europea.

Dopo dodici mesi di collaborazione sinergica tra i tecnici dell’azienda Denaldi ed il Politecnico di Torino, nelle figure dei docenti tutors e degli studenti vincitori della borsa di studio, ha preso forma il documento progettuale completo, il quale ha finalmente dato a woodbox un’immagine architettonicamente definita.

Il sistema abitativo woodbox nasce dall’esigenza di creare insediamenti che rispondano ai mutati stili di vita, al mutato rapporto con l’ambiente ed all’esigenza di provvedere allo smaltimento dell’edificio a fine vita.

Ogni sistema woodbox é l’output di un algoritmo di progettazione parametrica che ha come input fondamentali i requisiti dell’utente e la scansione del sito. Le esigenze del committente e i dati del sito quali orientamento, esposizione, orografia, ecc. vengono combinati in una matrice che processata dal software restituisce una combinazione modulare di elementi interni coperti ed un esoscheletro esterno che li avvolge, creando geometrie biomorfe e costituendo il tessuto connettivo tra il “contenitore abitativo” e l’ambiente naturale e/o artificiale circostante. Ne deriva un abaco progettuale modulare, logisticamente ed economicamente governabile.

Il sistema woodbox permette di realizzare sistemi abitativi di dimensioni e destinazioni d’uso differenti, partendo dagli stessi elementi costituitivi di base ma con un design sempre nuovo.

Nel corso del 2010 verrà realizzato il primo prototipo di edificio realizzato con il sistema woodbox. Il progetto rientra nelle politiche di finanziamento ai poli di innovazione promosse dalla Unione Europea tramite la Regione Piemonte. Il sito prescelto è quello di Environment Park a Torino, capofila del polo di innovazione per la Bioarchitettura e l’Idrogeno.

Il prototipo sarà un edificio cosiddetto off-grid, con destinazione d’uso ad uffici ed simbioticamente immerso nella natura del parco. Avendo adottato il legno come materiale di eccellenza, il progetto è stato infine selezionato per la partecipazione alla World Conference of Timber Engeneering (WCTE) 2010, prevista per giugno a Riva del Garda, che costituirà la vetrina per il lancio ufficiale del sistema woodbox.

the gowanus site is a toxic body in which the degeneration of the space is a direct consequence of the industrial and criminal activities that took place here over time. the environmental clean up is a necessity. there is an hygienic problem that needs to be addressed, and social potential that need to be unveiled. a mere sterilization of the site is not enough, there is a need of oxygen to sustain life. the appearance of a gowanus social movement can be the engine of renovation. such a movement requires a specific space that embed also the dark and degenerated aspects of the area within an hygienic project.

the toxic body is treated thru a fluid dynamics approach, that modulates the space as a fluid matter in order to create the conditions for the formation of a social movement embedding art and environmental issues. creating, lobbying, activism, education, interaction, gathering, organizing are the activities that take place here. the fluid matter behaves like oil spill body: viscosities, frictions, steady matter, turbulent areas, compressible spaces shape the image of a unique hydrocarbon architecture optimized to create the conditions for the settlement of a unique social movement.

oggi inaugura a pescara il primo Liv'In De Longhi store di nuova concezione. abbiamo curato l'intero processo creativo di retail design partendo dallo studio di marketing strategico sviluppato da Ohkaunit srl, società di Treviso. in particolare abbiamo disegnato gli arredi e ideato la campagna di comunicazione in store, e abbiamo seguito anche la realizzazione dello store. pubblichiamo alcune img degli ultimi giorni di cantiere.

cg has been involved as design consultant in the project woodbox by denaldi legnami and politecnico di torino.

WB system is a new way of thinking small living spaces, intended for temporary use, easily activated and disengaged. The customer will be able to configure the WB according to their specific needs (FLEXIBILITY) within a predetermined choice, with an installation that has the least impact on the environment that will occupy (REVERSIBILITY). This will require a low activation operation and removal energy (SUSTAINABLE); so it will need less energy as possible for its operation and largely derived from renewable energy (ENERGY VIRTUOSITY). The requirement of sustainability also includes the optimization of logistics in terms of an ease transport of all the elements. In this sense, the design must be geared towards maximum prefabrication system in order to better manage the process of construction and timing. USE OF WOOD in traditional or innovative ways should be preferred but in combination with other materials. A final consideration concerns the uses. They are necessarily "blurred", so that its possible to think the WB as a home for the weekend, but also as a small office, or a relaxing place. However, an installation of small size, rather expandable with dilatation of the external spaces. Finally the system must have in the design of each component content of innovation recognition. Each configuration is a gallery of living objects aesthetically interesting and able to develop commercially desire and belonging.

vivialp is an interactive navigation software that allows a fly experience thru the alps. we designed (with giulio caresio and davide del giudice) three vivialp pavillions that will be installed in the museum of natural science in torino, in the bard castel (aosta), and in the visitors center of the gran paradiso natural park in cognes (aosta). here are some construction in progress pictures.

autogrill competition

we publish the panels we produced for the autogrill competition. (last lost comp. series...). the competition brief asked for a concept layout for a self-serving restaurant specially conceived to accomodate disabled people.

we conceived an unusual space in which everybody has to reinvent how to use it as a restaurant. everybody is obliged to learn again how to move in that space, transforming ideally all in disabled persons. (ops! I realized that the text was a little provocatory, talking about tattooed space and tattooed people... and take full responsibility of that...cg)
